Organisational context
Agro-Pastoral Charity Organization (APCO) is a local non-governmental, non-profit-making organisation founded in 1998 that supports vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian crises in Somalia. APCO provides continued support to vulnerable communities by ensuring the sustainability of post-crisis interventions and addressing the long-term challenges facing our target populations — breaking the poverty cycle, fostering development and reducing vulnerability to disasters. In partnership with the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF), APCO is implementing a nutrition project titled “Lifesaving Nutrition response for underserved communities impacted by climatic shocks in Sablaale District, Lower Shabelle Region, Somalia”, delivered through one fixed nutrition site in Buulo Doonka and two mobile outreach teams serving Mud Kalmooy, Halimayal, Caanawaa and Yaadjile villages. APCO is therefore looking for a professionally confident, self-motivated, experienced and committed community health worker.
The Role
Community Health Workers (CHWs) convey nutrition messages through house-to-house visits and community gatherings, and they also screen and identify malnourished children and PLW. Allocation across the five target villages is population-based: Halimayal (4), Buulo Doonka (3), Yaadjile (3), Mud Kalmooy (2), Caanawaa (2).
Duties and Responsibilities
•Facilitate community mapping and mobilisation, ensuring participation of all groups.
•Arrange community meetings with elders, community leaders and local stakeholders.
•Conduct MUAC screening and active case finding to identify SAM and MAM children and at-risk PLW.
•Refer identified SAM cases to the Buulo Doonka OTP site/mobile teams and MAM cases and malnourished PLW to WFP-supported TSFP services; follow up on cases and trace defaulters.
• Assist in strengthening the referral system for maternal healthcare and nutrition.
•Support mass MUAC and oedema screening campaigns and family/mother MUAC caregiver training.
•Deliver nutrition messaging and support outreach and accountability activities.
•Establish mothers’ groups/care groups and facilitate regular meetings; arrange cooking demonstrations of nutritious food (Shurbad Kobciye).
•Participate in meetings as requested by the senior nutrition team.
•Any other tasks assigned by the line manager.
Required Skills and Experience
•At least a high school certificate/diploma; a diploma in nursing/nutrition is an added value.
•Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar position is required.
•A resident in, and able to work within, the target village applied for (Buulo Doonka, Mud Kalmooy, Halimayal, Caanawaa or Yaadjile).
•Good organisational, interpersonal and critical-thinking skills; ability to work in a team.
•Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in Somali is required.
